Customized Curricula Is More Effective

The trouble with standard, off-the-shelf training manuals, learning guides and other generic curricula is that there is simply too much of information included that isn't relevant to your chosen training message and too little information included for what is.  Plus, the last thing you want to do is inundate your end users with a hundred pages of support and training material and hope they remember where among the rough the diamonds were.  Studies have shown that for that percentage of users that will consult documentation post-training, they will only spend an average of 50 seconds looking for what they need before they give up and try to get the information from another source.  And there's always the danger that off-the-shelf curricula will work to reinforce the idea that many users often have before they even walk into training - that it's 'mandatory', 'just something one has to do' and of marginal value.  And since most training programs are everything but marginal in value if users were fully enrolled in their content and purpose - you want to make sure that your curricula does the following:

Does not:

  • Does not inadvertently disrespect student's time by inundating them with material they don't need or answers so buried within it that they can't be gotten readily;

  • Does not have any more than one or two elements that can readily be identified by students as 'canned' or 'off-the-shelf';

  • Does not veer away from the identified content and mode of delivery that are the foundation on which the stated program objectives rest;

Does:

  • Create excitement prior to and during the content delivery phase;

  • Look customized and special - because in the minds of end-users, if it looks customized and special, then it must be - and even further - you must think they are, too;

  • Actively employ the principles of adult learning and other current discoveries about how adults learn and how best to enroll them in their own education;

  • Incorporate lessons for program improvement that have been learned from past training efforts;

  • Vary in some positive way from prior programs to make sure users are unable to form a misconception that the format, content or method of delivery of future training programs is in any way able to be known or accurately assessed in advance;

  • Lay a solid foundation of goodwill and positive experience in the minds of users that can be drawn on to create energy and excitement in advance of the next training initiative so that students arrive already inclined to have a positive experience and are ready to learn.

Customized Doesn't Necessarily Mean More Expensive

In fact, many times customized curricula can be obtained for less than off-the-shelf materials simply for the fact that you aren't paying for everything you don't need or want.  And there's always the hidden cost attached to 'canned' curricula that it may reinforce the idea that the training program is not important and their involvement and effort is correspondingly less essential.

We can help you develop customized curricula that fits you budget and your objectives.  We encourage you to call our office and speak directly with our Company Vice President, Mr. Steven Sharp, MS at (877) 668-7403 or (404) 961-7220.  His office will work with you to create an affordable, effective solution that is just as customized as you, your training initiative and your end-users are.  If you would like to view more contact options, just click here.
