1 A 'meta-search' engine is a search engine that searches other search engines. There Is a Difference Between Search Engines Internet search engines compile their data by cataloging the Web using one or both of two methods: through the deployment of specialized, automated software search programs - or 'bots', as they are commonly called; by employing teams of actual human indexers that physically catalogue the Web.
